Things to know when getting a fibre package

This article addresses some of the common questions about getting a fibre package.

Fibre coverage

Several South African fibre companies, including FPSA, are working to ensure everyone is covered for fibre. Unfortunately, it’s a slow process. However, it’s easy to check your fibre coverage status, and in the meantime, you can opt for an ADSL or an LTE connection.

Choosing an ISP

Don’t make the mistake of picking the cheapest fibre package. First, ensure the fibre internet service provider (ISP) offers network coverage in your region.

The cost of fibre installation

Fibre installation involves running a fibre-optic cable from the street right into your home. In addition, a fibre ONT/CPE device will be installed on your wall. There is a cost involved for the parts and labour this involves. If you do find a free installation fibre package, read the fine print carefully. Often ISPs that offer a free installation has a clause that holds you liable for the installation costs if you cancel within 12 months.

Need a new router?

The fibre ONT/CPE device connects your home to the fibre network. On the other side, you can connect a standard Wi-Fi router. If your router has a WAN port, there’s no need to get a new one.

Seamless HD streaming

If you want to use HD streaming for a service like Netflix, you don’t need more than 5Mbps. However, depending on the size of your household, you might want to start with 10Mbps for four people and see if you need to upgrade after a few months, if necessary.

Fibre installation waiting period

Fibre installations are contracted out to independent fibre installers. With a limited number of installers, you may need to wait from a few days to weeks.
