Choosing business fibre

Choosing business fibre

As a business owner, there are certain factors you should consider before deciding on business fibre. Let’s break things down.

How much fibre do you need?

Regardless of your company’s size or industry, fast and reliable internet connectivity is non-negotiable. It has become crucial to most business functions – from eCommerce, stock management, point-of-sale, etc.

Fortunately, fibre for business is becoming ubiquitous, and various service providers offer a selection of fibre packages for your business. But, before you sign up for business fibre, you should determine how much fibre your organisation needs.

One of the most significant considerations for business fibre is the speed of your internet connection. Interrogate the bandwidth you need for your business to run smoothly daily.

Broadband internet speeds are usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Therefore, the higher number of Mbps you have, the faster your connection should be.

  • A 5 – 10 Mbps connection should be sufficient for a home office connected to up to three devices.
  • If your business has about 20 people or 40 devices connected to the internet, 20 – 50 Mbps is a good option. On this line, up to five devices at once can also do HD streaming comfortably.
  • Medium-to-large businesses with between 40 to 90 internet-connected devices should opt for a 30 – 100 Mbps line.
  • Companies that are very reliant on a fast internet connection should consider 100 to 1 000 Mbps.

Most leading internet service providers (ISPs) will tailor a business fibre package to meet your company’s specific requirements.

Some of the standard business fibre packages include:

  • Fibre-to-the-building (FTTB): High-speed internet at affordable rates – ideal for smaller businesses or home offices.
  • Business fibre broadband uncapped: Faster, more affordable internet solution for small-to-medium enterprises.
  • Business fibre dedicated uncapped: High-speed uncontended lines – perfect for larger corporations that transfer significant amounts of data daily.

Business area

There are still large parts of the country without business fibre readily available. While this is a more significant issue in rural areas, you’ll need to check the availability of fibre cables in your particular region. Then, get in touch with an ISP that can connect you. FPSA can inform you whether fibre has already been deployed in your area. If not, we will advise you on the process to follow to organise the introduction of fibre in the region.

Costs involved

As with every other business decision, it’s necessary to weigh up the cost and ensure you’re not overpaying for a standard service. Research the different packages in terms of bandwidth availability, internet type and prices to determine the best ISP for your needs.

Scalability and flexibility

Since you’re determined to grow your business, there must be flexibility in your business fibre package to scale accordingly. Ensure the ISP you choose can easily upgrade your system without adding excessive costs.

Reliability

Reliability goes hand-in-hand with internet speed as a top deciding factor for choosing a business fibre provider.

Capped or uncapped?

How much data you need is another critical business fibre considerations. A capped contract limits the amount of data you can use monthly. You can pay to top up your data once you’ve reached your cap. However, a top-up is usually charged at a much higher rate. So unless you’re confident you know precisely how much data you will use every month, you should opt for an uncapped contract.

ISP reputation

It is worth checking the industry experience of ISPs that offer rates and deals others can’t compete with. Will they deliver on their promises? Even new ISPs should have solid background information to ensure their assurances are kept. In addition, companies that are willing to go the extra mile when providing business fibre are worth considering.

Support offered

Arguably the most crucial factor when choosing a business fibre provider is the support offered. From attending to faulty hardware or damaged lines to assisting with a query, support is critical to your organisation’s uninterrupted operation.

Installation of fibre to home internet

Installation of fibre to home internet

Fibre services and installations to home enable faster upload and download speeds and you will be able to enjoy your streaming services, gaming experiences and social media exploration more efficiently.

What to expect during fibre to home installation

If you’re working from home fibre will not limit your working speeds. Once you’ve purchased your fibre to home package from FPSA, these are the next steps to finalise fibre services and installations to home.

When your package has been purchased an application for an installation will be sent to FPSA from your selected internet service provider (ISP). Our team will schedule an installation appointment and check whether fibre has already been deployed in your neighbourhood. If not, FPSA will contact residents in your community to assess the interest in having fibre services and installations to home arranged in the area.

After receiving a request to have fibre services and installations to home provided to a community our team will do the research if necessary and keep you up to date on the progress of rolling out fibre in your area. FPSA will be responsible for establishing the fibre network infrastructure either through trenching or aerial deployment.

The difference

Trenching deployment involves FPSA getting permission from the local council to install fibre along the sidewalks in protective ducts.

Aerial installation requires the planting of poles, or utilising existing poles to deploy fibre overhead

From installation to connection

Now that the fibre network has been established in your neighbourhood, you need a fibre line to be installed from the outside connection point to the inside of your home. To do this, an optical line terminal (ONT) is placed by FPSA. When all of this is completed, your ISP will finalise the activation of the internet connection.

If the network is already established in your neighbourhood, fibre services and installations to your home should take approximately two to four hours and the FPSA team will need to access your home to install the Wi-Fi-enabled ONT. If you cannot be there yourself, you can arrange for another adult to help direct the installation and sign off on it.

Once your ISP package is activated, you’ll have access to the world of fast, uncapped, and reliable internet.

Things to know when getting a fibre package

Things to know when getting a fibre package

This article addresses some of the common questions about getting a fibre package.

Fibre coverage

Several South African fibre companies, including FPSA, are working to ensure everyone is covered for fibre. Unfortunately, it’s a slow process. However, it’s easy to check your fibre coverage status, and in the meantime, you can opt for an ADSL or an LTE connection.

Choosing an ISP

Don’t make the mistake of picking the cheapest fibre package. First, ensure the fibre internet service provider (ISP) offers network coverage in your region.

The cost of fibre installation

Fibre installation involves running a fibre-optic cable from the street right into your home. In addition, a fibre ONT/CPE device will be installed on your wall. There is a cost involved for the parts and labour this involves. If you do find a free installation fibre package, read the fine print carefully. Often ISPs that offer a free installation has a clause that holds you liable for the installation costs if you cancel within 12 months.

Need a new router?

The fibre ONT/CPE device connects your home to the fibre network. On the other side, you can connect a standard Wi-Fi router. If your router has a WAN port, there’s no need to get a new one.

Seamless HD streaming

If you want to use HD streaming for a service like Netflix, you don’t need more than 5Mbps. However, depending on the size of your household, you might want to start with 10Mbps for four people and see if you need to upgrade after a few months, if necessary.

Fibre installation waiting period

Fibre installations are contracted out to independent fibre installers. With a limited number of installers, you may need to wait from a few days to weeks.

Understanding fibre to the home

Understanding fibre to the home

Fibre to the home (FTTH) refers to installing and using a fibre network from a centra

l point directly to individual homes, regardless of whether these are suburban residences or apartments within

complexes. Fibre to the home offer significantly increased connection speeds compared to digital subscriber line (DSL) connections.

How fibre to the home works

Fibre to the home is a direct connection of optical fibre to residences. The access networks of fibre to the home generally follow a specific structure:

Fibre cables run from a central office through a fibre distribution hub (FDH), a network access point (NAP), then into the home through a junction box terminal.

Fibre to the home components

Active optical networks (AONs) and passive optical networks (PONs) are two systems that enable fibre to the home. Through electrically powered switching equipment, AONs actively direct the signal to users. On the other hand, PONs use optical splitters. While both types are used for fibre to the home implementations, PONs are used most frequently since they are cheaper to install while offering high performance.

Fibre to the home benefits

The primary benefit of fibre to the home is improved network performance, notably higher speeds.

As a result, you can expect crisp and seamless high-definition video streaming and crystal-clear audio with no lag.

Since fibre optic cables are less susceptible to problems than traditional copper wires, they can withstand shock and vibration associated with extreme weather conditions. They are also less likely to be stolen and sold on the black market, which means you’ll have an uninterrupted connection.

Fibre to the home has been called “future proof” because of the longevity and durability of this system to continue to deliver services for years to come.

The future of fibre to the home

Fibre to the home continues to grow to accommodate the increasing network demands of the modern consumer. Fibre to the home technology is continually becoming easier to install and cheaper to use.
